When a lender performs a soft credit check they’ll ask for your social security number to request your credit score from a credit reporting agency. Your credit score gives lenders a precise monthly debt calculation and helps them calculate a more precise number for what you can borrow. In many cases knowing your credit score helps lenders discuss your financing options with you.

Soft credit checks don’t impact your credit score in any way because (from the credit reporting agency’s perspective) they’re not attached to any particular application for credit. Soft credit inquiries can typically be completed without requiring any additional documentation to verify your financial situation.
