Temperature change has an essential effect on the pressure vessels. Temperature changes and temperature differences between a pressure vessel’s inner and outer surfaces lead to thermal stresses and strains.
The Finite Element Method can be used to accurately calculate the temperature field in both steady-state and transient conditions.
In this tutorial, a pressure vessel is subjected to steady-state operational conditions followed by transient conditions, which can be caused by an accident.
In the semi-coupled thermo-mechanical analysis, the temperature field is calculated first via the heat transfer step. Then, the temperature field is used as an input in a mechanical analysis to account for thermal strains and stresses.
