On 19 August 2018, Imprisoned opposition leader Hassan Mushaima called his son Ali Mushaima who is on the 19th day of his hunger strike outside the Bahraini Embassy in London.

Bahraini authorities claim that you receive full medical care and special meals for your condition?

Hassan: Our problem is that, regrettably, they do not deal with us wholeheartedly. They lie, they play around the truth when they say they are providing me with special food, and similar things. These are all lies. There are people who are willing to lie. God help us, Inshallah.

They said you refuse to attend your medical appointment and family visitation?

When you are bound by those chains...I, as a free human being with dignity, can’t accept that; no one would accept that. No one would have a different opinion about visiting their family and beloved ones in those conditions. No one would want to be denied medical treatment.

They said that these are normal procedures?

I told you this before; we had no problems before, when we were treated normally. But since the new administration came, the problems began. I do not believe this depends on the new administration, but there are “orders from above”, orders to harass us.

How is your health condition now?

Now I suffer from high sugar levels. They are always high. I need to take 2-3 insulin shots every day to keep them under control. Before, this issue would be naturally resolved with sports and movement, but now things are different. This is because they stopped my treatment a year ago and I have not been seen by a specialist for diabetes who could prescribe me an adequate follow-up treatment ever since, which is important.

I have the same issue with all the illnesses I suffer from.

Now, I fear that cancer has returned, not to mention all the other complications arising from the other illnesses I suffer from. The issue with diabetes could impact my psychological state. The distress I am subjected to every time I am denied medication is having a negative impact on my health. And it’s the same with cancer. Everybody knows that cancer can return at any time. The treatment which I started in London years ago did not continue in Bahrain, where I was only treated twice. Therefore I cannot completely exclude that the cancer has returned. According to the doctors, I need to have my scans every six months, yet over a year has now passed since they last allowed me to do my check up. How do I know whether the cancer has returned or not? Without adequate and regular follow-up treatment, obviously all my health issues will have complications.

Ali: Don’t forget us in your prayers.

Hassan: I always think about you, my son. I am very much concerned about you. I think of you night and day and always pray for you.

Ali: This is your basic rights which should not be negotiated. It shouldn’t be an opinion and an opposing opinion. This is unethical, that a man is banned from medical treatment and seeing his family.
