The 8th edition of the India Mobile Congress coincided with the International Telecommunication Union - World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly (WTSA) 2024 at the Bharat Mandapam. The inauguration ceremony saw industry leaders, union telecom minister Scindia and of course, Prime Minister Narendra Modi grace the stage and address the attendees.

The WTSA is a quadrennial event that is taking place in India for the first time this year. The fact that WTSA and IMC are taking place at the same time, says a lot about the government’s bullish mentality in promoting new gen tech like 6G, AI and cybersecurity and making it more accessible.

In our first IMC coverage back in 2022, the focus of the conference was the 5G rollout. Fast forward 2 years, and the Prime Minister is already talking about being a global leader in 6G.

Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia set the stage and the tone for this year’s conference. He stated that India followed the world in 4G and marched along in the rollout of 5G, but India shall take the lead in 6G technology.

The Prime Minister lauded the strides made by India’s telecom sector in the last few years especially with regards to 5G rollout, the impact of super-fast connectivity in promoting financial inclusivity through the JAM trinity and DBT. But more than these strides, a large focus of the speech today was on some macro issues concerning our digital future.

PM Modi called for a global framework on digital technology and said that it is time for global institutions to recognise this framework’s importance in global governance. He urged technology leaders present here at the conference to make standards around ethical AI which respects the diversity of other countries.

The Prime Minister said that these two conferences- The WTSA 2024 and IMC are built on consensus and connectivity, respectively. Both of these are important in a conflict-ridden world and that India is at the forefront of taking the world out of the conflict towards its goal of one earth, one family and one future.
