The Exorcist is no ordinary horror movie, there are no slasher moments, no jump shocks and we only see “Captain Howdy”, our antagonist for less than a second, and only hear him via the fantastic radio actress Mercedes McCambridge speaking through the proxy of a possessed child. The Exorcist is also a horror movie nominated for 10 Academy Awards (and takes home 2) has to be worth anyone’s attention, even if you are not a fan of the Genre.
This movie tells the tale of a young girl Regan, portrayed in an Oscar-nominated debut role by Linda Blair, possessed by the demon Pazuzu and the two priests trying to save her life.
Masterfully crafted by director William Friedkin; this movie had people vomiting, screaming and fleeing movie theatres upon its release. Today we know it as the most terrifying movie of all time, and any moviegoer takes on this experience with their buttocks already firmly clenched. One of the aspects of the movie that helps build anxiety in the audience is the genius use of sound. Even in the more slow-burning parts of the story where characters are being defined and our empathy being manipulated, there is something evil lurking under the surface that is subtle and almost unnoticeable which has been masterfully crafted in the creative use of audio for which it took home one of its two Oscars. There are too some stunning yet simple visual effects that will leave you wondering how it was done; which are still the topic of discussion today some 45 years after its release. On top of this there are subliminal cuts that feature the antagonist Pazuzu’s only screen appearance which amounts to 3 eights of a second of screen time, barely enough for anyone to notice, but ample time to genuinely unnerve any moviegoer, which is what makes Pazuzus image perhaps the most iconic and terrifying “villain” in movie history.
The Exorcist is perhaps the best story of good triumphing over evil that you can watch, as it takes you on quite the emotional journey that will have a lasting and profound effect on anyone who watches it.
