After hours of long haul forest guards succeeded in rescuing a leopard cub from a deep well in a village near Kanha reserve forest in India's central Madhya Pradesh province.

The wild cat was stuck in a well of a compound near a farmer's house in Balaghat district in the province on Sunday (April 13).

Villagers spotted the leopard at 6 am (IST) and alerted police to carry out the rescue operation immediately.

Hundreds of people from nearby areas thronged hamlet to catch a glimpse of the trapped big cat.

Describing the operation, Sub Divisional Officer, SS Srivastav said water in the well had to be pumped out adding to difficulties during the rescue operation.

"We had to evacuate the water from the well and that delayed the rescue operation. Or else after being tranquilised it would have drowned in the well. So we had evacuated the water before the operation," said Srivastav.

The animal was tranquilised and subsequently pulled out using a net.

The vet said that the animal was given a dose of antibiotics and anti inflammatory drugs after being rescued.

"We have given antibiotics, anti inflammatory and put bandages on bruised parts," said a Veterinary doctor, Kanha National Park, Dr. Agarwal.

The police had difficulties in controlling the crowd and normalcy was only restored after the wild cat was shifted to the forestry complex.

Human-animal conflict is widespread in rural areas in India. As man encroaches on wilderness, the wild strays into urban settlements.

Illegal deforestation, logging, earth-cutting and extension of residential settlements and croplands into reserved forests and hillocks have reduced the natural habitat of animals, forcing animals to wander around in search of food.
