The Arulmigu Manakula Vinayagar Temple and the temple Elephant Lakshmi, are two main tourist attractions in Pondicherry. Among the French colonial-era buildings, you can find this beautiful Hindu temple Arulmigu Manakula Vinayagar Devasthanam, which is one of the main attractions in Pondicherry, dedicated to the Hindu God Ganesha.
The temple is situated near the Bay of Bengal. The name of the god Manakula Vinayagar is derived from Tamil name "Manal Kulathu Vinayagar", which means the God Vinayagar near a pond which is filled with sandy soil. The temple also known as Ganesh Temple, and Pillaiyar Kovil by locals. It’s unknown that when this ancient temple was built. But it survived from many demolition attempts during the colonial-era.
The temple is known for the colourful paintings and sculptures of God Vinayagar, a 10 ft tall Golden Chariot, Golden Vimanam (which is a structure above the main deity), and not least of all the smart and gentle temple elephant Lakshmi.
