Better Bankside took part in Earth Hour to demonstrate how collective action can make a significant impact.

Local businesses in our district, including significant landmarks such as Tate Modern, Shakespeare's Globe and Southwark Cathedral, switched off on 25 March from 8.30pm - 9.30pm to support the worldwide Earth Hour initiative which this year was titled 'The Biggest Hour for Earth' and over 187  countries and territories were involved.

The carbon footprint of the Better Bankside BID area is hefty – over 97,000 tCO2e. A staggering 87% of these emissions come from energy with nearly half (47%) of total emissions coming from businesses. We’ve worked closely with local consultants Eight Versa to get a better picture of the action we can take to reduce our carbon emissions. If businesses alone turned off their lights at night, this would lead to a substantial reduction in emissions, the equivalent of over 8 million miles driven by an average car, 650 homes’ electricity for one year and 404 million smartphones charged. Taking part in Earth Hour illustrates to businesses and individuals how simple it can be to make small changes that have a big impact.
