"Baleleng" is one of the most famous folk songs of the Philippines. The composer is unknown, but the song is believed to originate from the Visayas, an island group in central Philippines, considered to be the cradle of the country for being central in its history and for being one of the earliest landfalls of western voyagers such as Ferdinand Magellan. It is a love song based on the perspective of a young man bidding goodbye to a lovely maiden called "Leleng" (my dear).
