Wood chips are a very good source of mulch as they return a lot of biomass and organic matter back to the soil. This biomass is essential for life in the soil to sustain itself, and also keeps the moisture from evaporating. The advantage of planting a lot of native trees on your farm is that they can be pruned aggressively each year, and yield a lot of biomass to convert into wood chips. Wood chips are a good mulch as they do not fly away in the wind, and take over a year to decompose completely, thereby reducing the frequency of re-mulching.
