War

Shards of light rain down,
A halo shines around me,
Blazing metal and phosphorus,
Illuminate the sea,

Roaring in the clouds,
I hear the beasts are flying,
Crackles in the sky above,
Just before the dying,

Creaking on the water,
The fires now are gleaming,
Just before they sink below,
Metal sounds and screaming,

A wailing sound above,
Gets louder in its fury,
Until its apex tears apart,
Victims trying to scurry,

A mist of soot and crimson,
Now paints their charing shadows,
A lunar veil illuminates,
Their corpses in the shallows,

Crying out in pain,
When will this all end?
Leaded solace fills the night,
Their parting gift to send,

Hands reach out to clasp,
A fleeting hopeful guise,
Just before the light fades out,
Inside their loved one’s eyes,

Widows and their orphans,
The only ones who’ll live,
Past this bloody nightmare,
With nothing left to give,

And when it’s finally over,
History will repeat,
‘Til no futures’ left to kill,
Or dreams left to defeat.
