The friction drive is not noisier than other drives, thus the tire street contact noise is higher.

However due to the small size of the motor. the frequency of the motor noise is higher than with bigger and also much heavier motors. Some people like it, some less. We have worked hard to make the motor silent.
Some technical details:

The "essential line" has an internal motor noise damper which reduces the noise significantly compared to other friction drives and small motor systems.

To further reduce the noise to a nearly not noticeable level, we developed a high end silent controller, which eliminates the the noise at the origin.

But best judge your self.

In the video we are showing the "essential line" system and giving a heads up to the "perfromance line" Gboost system

The "performance line" is planned to be available in 2015, also as a compatible retrofit upgrade to the current "essential line". So you will be able to choose later on. if the "essential line" is good enough or if you prefer to upgrade to the silent " performance line"
