Kelly Thoma's Music Group at the Western and World Symposium

Western and World is a much-needed forum about the forms and limits of Western hegemony in music presentation, production, and education. Breaking from traditional academic conferences, the symposium feautred over 18 presentations, performances, and round-table discussions to bridge music communities.

The Western and World Symposium is supported by the Canada Council for the Arts and Department of Canadian Heritage, and is co-presented with The Music Gallery and TONE Festival.

In the 6 days leading up to the Symposium, Kelly Thoma will work with workshop participants on a selection of compositions of contemporary modal composers as well as on certain traditional pieces from a variety of backgrounds. She will teach by rote, so that participants will gradually commit the compositions to memory. The nature and progress of the seminar are very much dependent upon the composition of the group participating, which instruments they play for example, and as a result, the exact repertoire is not possible to be formulated beforehand.
