I built a tongue drum

The process of making a steel tongue drum.

In his hobby workshop, my cousin makes a wide variety of objects. After seeing a tongue drum for the first time, he wanted to try his hand at making one himself.

In this video, the process of making this very drum is shown. A propane tank is cut into two halves, which are stripped of their paint and then welded back together.

The tongues of the tank drum are first pre-drawn, then a holes are cut with a Dremel. Tuning the tongues requires a bit of dexterity - the longer the cut, the more mass the tongue has, which makes its tone deeper.

Lastly, the markings were removed and the tank drum was oiled so that it is less susceptible to rust.
