Ja Rule: From Jehovah's Witness to Hip-Hop Icon
Jeffrey Bruce Atkins—Ja Rule—was born February 29, 1976, in Hollis, Queens, making him a leap year baby with a birthday every four years. Raised in a strict Jehovah's Witness household by his mother and grandparents, he wasn't allowed birthdays, Christmas, or secular music. After his sister Kristen died in utero when he was five and his father abandoned the family, Ja Rule listened to rap secretly, finding his calling. At 17, he dropped out of Martin Van Buren High School to join Cash Money Click. By 1999, his debut album "Venni Vetti Vecci" debuted at #3 on Billboard 200, going platinum with "Holla Holla." From 2000-2002, he released three consecutive platinum albums: Rule 3:36, Pain Is Love, and Last Temptation. His collaborations with Jennifer Lopez ("I'm Real"), Ashanti ("Always on Time"), and R. Kelly ("Wonderful") dominated early 2000s radio. Legal troubles followed—2003 assault charge ($1,200 fine), 2007 weapons possession leading to two years in prison (2011-2013). High-profile feuds with 50 Cent, Eminem, and DMX, plus Murder Inc.'s investigation for money laundering, complicated his legacy. Despite setbacks, Ja Rule married high school sweetheart Aisha Murray in 2001 and has three children. His story represents overcoming religious restriction, poverty, and systemic barriers to reshape hip-hop.
