Описание к видео Under the Miami Sun: Stories of Race, Risk, and Resilience | Episode 1: Overtown

In the debut episode of FIU’s Mellon-funded 'Commons for Justice' series, Under the Miami Sun: Stories of Race, Risk, and Resilience, the 'Commons for Justice' podcast team enters Overtown, a historic Black neighborhood in Miami that has endured decades of segregation, violence, and systemic neglect. Once known as “The Harlem of the South,” Overtown was a vibrant hub for Black culture and business. Now, it stands at a crossroads as climate gentrification threatens its legacy.

This episode explores Overtown’s past, present, and future through visits to landmarks like Jackson Soul Food, a community cornerstone; Dana A. Dorsey’s historic home, Miami's first Black millionaire; and Dr. Marvin Dunn's 'Teach the Truth' Garden, a living monument to the fight for historical justice. Featuring interviews with community leaders, residents, and activists, the episode sheds light on the rising rents and increased demand for higher, drier land by newcomers escaping climate-driven flooding—pressures that disproportionately impact Black and Brown residents. This powerful story highlights resilience and the fight to preserve a neighborhood’s soul amidst mounting challenges.
