Описание к видео Doctor explains Carotid Endarterectomy | Procedure, benefits, risks and recovery

In this video Dr O'Donovan covers key things you need to know about Carotid Endarterectomy.

Carotid endarterectomy is a surgical procedure to remove plaque buildup from the carotid arteries, the main blood vessels supplying the brain. This procedure aims to reduce the risk of stroke by improving blood flow to the brain. It is typically recommended for individuals with moderate to severe carotid artery stenosis, especially those who have experienced stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA) symptoms.

What is Carotid Endarterectomy?
Carotid endarterectomy is a surgical procedure to remove plaque buildup in the carotid arteries, which are located on either side of the neck and carry blood to the brain. Plaque buildup, also known as carotid artery disease or stenosis, can restrict blood flow and increase the risk of stroke or TIA.

Why is a Carotid Endarterectomy done?

A. Stroke Prevention: The primary goal is to prevent strokes by removing the blockage that is causing reduced blood flow to the brain.

B. Symptom Management: It can be recommended for individuals who have experienced symptoms of reduced blood flow to the brain, such as dizziness, numbness, confusion, or temporary vision loss.

C. Severe Stenosis: Surgery is generally advised when the carotid artery is narrowed by more than 70%.

How is it done?

Anesthesia: The procedure can be performed under general or local anesthesia.
Incision: A surgical incision is made in the neck to access the carotid artery.
Plaque Removal: The artery is opened, and the plaque is carefully removed.
Closure: The artery is closed with stitches, sometimes with a patch to widen the artery.
Duration: The procedure typically takes 1-2 hours.

What are the risks of carotid endarterectomy?

Stroke: There is a small risk of stroke during or after the surgery.
Bleeding: Bleeding can occur at the incision site.
Infection: Like any surgery, there is a risk of infection.
Other: Other potential risks include pain, difficulty swallowing, and further narrowing of the artery.

Recovery:
-Hospital Stay: Most patients can return home within 24 hours.
-Pain Management: Pain relief medication is typically provided.
-Return to Activities: Patients can usually return to normal activities within a few days or weeks.

Alternatives: Carotid Artery Stenting: An alternative procedure where a stent is placed to keep the artery open.
Medications: Medications can be used to manage risk factors and prevent blood clots.

Effectiveness:
Carotid endarterectomy is a well-established procedure that has been shown to be effective in reducing the risk of stroke, particularly in individuals with severe carotid stenosis
