When applied properly, dust insecticides have many advantages over other types of formulations in treating for structural pests:

Dusts provide broad spectrum control of a wide array of crawling and flying pests
Dusts are ready to use with no mixing required
Dusts are easy to apply with very simple application equipment
Dusts can provide excellent coverage, and can penetrate hard to reach places where pests live and hide, such as in cracks and crevices, void areas behind walls, cabinets and above drop ceilings, in pipe chases and in attics and crawl spaces
Dusts can be effectively used around electrical outlets and wiring where liquid sprays can be problematic
Dusts can be easily picked up by insects on their legs and bodies when they crawl across treated surfaces
Dusts provide long residual control so there is less need for frequent retreatments
There are no pest resistance issues associated with the desiccant properties of dusts

BUT….no insecticide formulation is perfect, and that includes dusts. Here are some of the challenges when using a dust insecticide:

Dusts have a tendency to drift off target during applications. Care should be taken when applying dusts to prevent dust residues on exposed surfaces.
Applicators have a tendency to overapply dusts. When it comes to applying dust, less is more. If you apply it too heavy, insects might avoid it. An insect has to contact only a small number of dust particles for it to be effective.
Some dusts can be slow-acting, depending on the active ingredient.
