Il libro mastro, insieme al libro giornale, è eessenziale per la tenuta della contabilità generale COGE. Questi due registri sono strettamente collegati, in quanto, tutti i fatti esterni di gestione vengono riportati in entrambi:

nel libro giornale in modo cronologico, cioè in ordine di data;

nel libro mastro in modo sistematico, cioè in base all'oggetto al quale di riferiscono IL CONTO CONTABILE (per esempio Cassa Banca Merci c/vendita) .
