On Thursday, 30 January, people in #Bavarian cities protested against the joint vote by the #CDU #CSU and #AfD on the asylum issue the previous day. In #Munich, thousands of people gathered in front of the CSU headquarters and demanded a rethink from the politicians.

The demonstration was called by a broad alliance of parties and organizations such as “#Munich is colourful” under the slogan “we are the firewall”.

In a later estimate, the police on site spoke of at least 7,000 demonstrators, the organizers spoke of 10,000. The participants in the demonstration repeatedly chanted directly under the office of CSU leader Markus Söder: “Shame on you, shame on you”.

Speakers included the former mayor of Munich, #Christian Ude (SPD). He fiercely criticized the actions of CDU/CSU chancellor candidate Friedrich Merz.

SOUNDBITE (German) Christian Ude, former SPD mayor of Munich: "Yes, out of personal concern. Yesterday I couldn't believe what the television was broadcasting from the #Bundestag. The CDU/CSU admits that it's just a symbolic act, that it doesn't make anyone safer or better protected. It's just a symbol, but a symbol of fraternization with a cheering AfD, which, as an extreme right-wing party, couldn't have wished for a better election present."

SOUNDBITE (German) protester: "Because I got such a fright last night and couldn't sleep and thought to myself that we have to make a statement right now. And because if not now, then when?"

SOUNDBITE (German) protester: "I'm here because I was totally shaken by this decision yesterday and I'm afraid that migration is being portrayed as the main threat to Germany, which I don't see at all, but I do see: I'm afraid of far-right radicalism."

SOUNDBITE (#German) protester: "I don't want to have to ask myself why I didn't do anything. That's why I want to try and set an example now."

SOUNDBITE (German) protester: "To set an example against the policies of the CSU and against the shift to the far-right in our society. Especially against the fact that parties are increasingly chumming up to AfD positions and becoming misanthropic."
