Using a pipette tip that's weighed down and glued shut at one we create a little swimmer that floats by virtue of having trapped some air inside her belly.

Compressing the 2l plastic bottle compresses this air inside the swimmer and reduces her buoyancy. As a result the swimmer sinks. As you let go, the air expands and the swimmer rises back to the surface.
