Set in the climate dystopia of a near-future 2024, Octavia Butler’s 1993 novel Parable of the Sower explores the feedback cycles of climate change and how the feedback cycle of human belief, personal agency, and action is entwined, writing “all that you touch you change”. This piece uses live laptop feedback to explore the metaphor of feedback cycles rendered tangible.

In this piece, the laptop feedback is use as a source of both live-processing and sound synthesis. The feedback is controlled by the gestures of the hands. Sound is emitted by the laptop’s speaker, reflecting off of the surface of the hand, and returning to the laptop’s microphone to re-enter the processing loop. Different proximities, hand shapes, and gestures impact the sound in different ways. As the voice enters the loop, it steers and influences the feedback while also being affected by its process.

In a time when we are a part of evermore complex, unstable, and invisible cycles of feedback, what happens if we can make an invisible cycle of feedback tangible? Maybe if we make the shape of change more real, we can more fully grasp the role we play in the feedback cycles that surround us.
