Welcome to the series premiere in the Far Bank Fly Fishing School video series, where we'll be answering the very simple question of "What is fly fishing?"

Whether you're a first-time fly fisher or simply curious about what fly fishing is, this episode is for you. See what makes fly fishing differ from traditional fishing, learn why fly fishers are so passionate about the sport, and check out what exactly is a “fly”.

In this episode, we cover the difference between casting a fly rod and a spinning rod, talk about what a fly is, discuss why people take up the sport of fly fishing, look at how to make a fish eat the fly, and how (and why) to set the hook.

At the end of this episode, you will have learned how fly casting and spin casting differ, gained an understanding of what a fly is and the different types of flies you might use. You will also see why fly fishing is considered by many to be complex to master, and begin to understand what entices people to subject themselves to a lifetime of learning. In the second half of this episode, we get a bit more technical and look at the importance of two core items used in fly fishing—fly line and leader. In addition, you will understand how a fly cast is achieved, how a fly is moved through the water to entice a fish to bite, and how to react when a fish finally does.
