Описание к видео How To Calculate Calories In, From Alcohol Explained - How Many Calories Beer, Wine And Hard Liquor

In this video we discuss how to calculate the number of calories from alcohol, calories from beer, calories from wine and calories from hard liquor.

Transcript/notes
To calculate the number of calories from alcohol in an alcoholic beverage, we first have to calculate the number of grams of alcohol in the beverage.
The formula to calculate the number of grams of alcohol in an alcoholic beverage is, grams of alcohol equals the number of ounces of the alcoholic beverage, times 29.5735, times the percentage of alcohol, times .789.

Then we take the result from the previous formula and multiply it times 7 calories per gram.

In the formula, the number of ounces of the alcoholic beverage is dependent of the type of alcoholic beverage. For instance, it could be a 12 ounce can of beer, a 6 ounce glass of wine, or a 1.5 ounce shot of vodka or whiskey.

One note, in a mixed drink, say a vodka and lemonade, this formula is only for the number of ounces of the alcohol, the vodka. So, if the mixed drink only has 1 ounce of alcohol, you would use 1 in the formula. And beer and wine often contain carbohydrates and sometimes protein.

I will go through a couple examples in this video that discusses the total calories from mixed drinks, and beer and wine more in depth.

In the formula, the constant 29.5735 is a conversion, as 1 ounce equals 29.5735 milliliters. The next variable in the formula, the percentage of alcohol is listed on the label. The average for wine is about 11.6%, the average is 5% for beer, and 40% for hard liquor, but it can range greatly for hard liquors.

And one note for hard liquor. If the label says 90 proof, this means 45% for alcohol, so just divide the proof number in half to get the percentage of alcohol.

And the last constant in the formula, .789 is the density of alcohol, which basically means how closely its atoms are packed together.

Let’s go through an example for a typical 5oz glass of wine that has 9 percent alcohol. We start by calculating the number of grams of alcohol. Using the formula we have grams of alcohol equals 5, the number of ounces times 29.5735, times 9%, the percentage of alcohol, which we need to convert to a decimal by dropping the percent sign and moving the decimal 2 places to the left to get .09, times .789. And this calculates to 10.5 grams of alcohol rounded off.

Next we take the result of 10.5 grams and multiply it by 7 calories per gram, and this equals 73.5 calories from alcohol for this glass of wine. Again, this is calories from alcohol only. Most wines do contain a small amount of carbohydrates, let’s say that this wine contained 3 grams of carbs for a 5 ounce serving, and no protein or fat. Carbohydrates provide 4 calories per gram, so 3 grams times 4 calories per gram equals 12 calories from carbs. We add the 73.5 calories from alcohol with 12 calories from carbs, which gives us a total of 85.5 total calories for this glass of wine.

Now let’s look at a 12 ounce can of beer that has 4.6% alcohol, 13.9 grams of carbs, 1.2 grams of protein and no fat.

The grams of alcohol equals, 12 times 29.5735 times .046, times .789, which is 12.88 grams of alcohol rounded off. Next we multiply 12.88 grams times 7 calories per gram, which equals 90.16 calories from alcohol. Now we need to add in the calories from carbs and protein, which both provide 4 calories per gram. So, 13.9 times 4, gives us 55.6 calories from carbs and 1.2 times 4, gives us 4.8 calories from protein.
Now we can add them up, 90.16 plus 55.6 plus 4.8 equals 150.56 total calories from this can of beer.

Here on the screen are a couple of examples for beers and wines with different alcohol percentages and different ounce amounts.
Now lets look at hard liquor, and hard liquor alone does not contain any carbs, protein or fat. Here is an example calculation for a 1.5 ounce shot of 90 proof whiskey, and a straight up dry 3 ounce 80 proof gin martini.
As for the calories for mixed drinks, you have to take into account the alcohol and the mixer. Earlier I mentioned a vodka and lemonade. Let’s say that someone has a 2 ounce pour of 70 proof vodka mixed with 6 ounces of lemonade. How many calories is this?

On the screen is the calculations for the calories for the 70 proof 2 ounce vodka. And the label lists the calories for lemonade at 100 for a 1 cup, 8oz serving. Since our serving is 6oz of lemonade, we divide 6 by 8, which equals .75, and then we multiply 100 by .75, which equals 75, so 75 calories from lemonade.
