The Highest Train in the Americas Across the Andes in Peru on Ferrocarril Central Andino

The train operated by Ferrocarril Central Andina between Huancayo and Lima, Peru crosses the Andes and the Continental Divide to reach an elevation of 15,692 feet (4,783 meters) at the Galera Summit Tunnel. For 113 years this was the highest rail line in the world until the opening of the Tibet railway in 2006. Today, this is the highest train in the Americas and the second highest railway in the world.

Between Lima and Huancayo, the train travels 214 miles (346 km) through the Andes and navigates a wide array of engineering marvels including 7 switchbacks, 69 tunnels (one spirals like a pig’s tail and one is nearly 3,400 feet / 1,000 meters long), and 58 bridges.
