What type of doctor should I get for my loved one with dementia? How do I decide? A lot of people go to the family doctor, and you may be lucky. It may be someone who's taken geriatric courses. But more often than not they will say. "Well, what do you want, they're old?" and they might give them Aricept. The neurologist knows more about neurology and the function of the brain, but not as much about the engagement and how to look at the whole person.

I'm biased. I think you should have a geriatrician, although I know there are only 6000 of us in the country (USA). The geriatrician knows about the complications of all the medications for the elder. We know what medications don't work well together. We also look at strength, function, mood, sleep, constipation. A Geriatrician will look at the whole person.
