Most large meat-eating dinosaurs are often associated with Tyrannosaurus rex, but the true relatives of the tyrant king belong to the clade Tyrannosauridae. Besides Tyrannosaurus itself, it includes Albertosaurus, Daspletosaurus, Lythronax, Tarbosaurus, Teratophoneus, Qianzhousaurus and many more, with a total count of nearly twenty species. They share a number of traits in common with T. rex to the exclusion of other theropod dinosaurs like Allosaurus, including greater intelligence, small arms with two fingered hands, elongated hind limbs, and powerful, robust jaws filled with bone-crushing teeth. The tyrannosaurids were the top predators in Asia and western North America during the Late Cretaceous Period, displaying a degree of raw power no predators before or since have matched. Yet the tyrannosaurids also dominated the lower levels of their ecosystems, with tyrannosaurid juveniles serving as remarkably fast hunters.
This video is an extensive overview of these incredible and highly distinct theropods. As the members of Tyrannosauridae have been the focus of more research than any other group of dinosaurs, this is video is appropriately very long.
It delves into topics such as the traits that made tyrannosaurids unique, their hunting strategies, whether or not tyrannosaurids hunted alone or in packs, what is known about their exceptionally strong senses, the purpose of their infamously small arms, how Tyrannosauridae is related to other dinosaurs, the rise of the tyrannosaurs as apex predators, covers the evidence for the tyrant dinosaurs being covered in feathers or scales, explores what is known about their often turbulent lifespans, and gives an overview of every single species of tyrannosaurid as well as the other dinosaurs they hunted and competed with. After watching this video, you will have a far greater appreciation for the dynasty of Tyrannosaurus rex.
