The first generation also known as the NA generation Miata sold over 400,000 units from 1989-1997. It received a ton of accolades including automobile magazines 1990 automobile of the year For the first four years It was powered by a 116hp 1.6 liter inline four and then would enlarge to a 1.8 liter, solely available with a five speed transmission. The first gen only offered up three colors; red, white and blue… and then a silver metallic color too later on.
1999 welcomes the second-generation aka NB generation with fixed headlight and glass rear window and an enlarged engine.
The NC generation, the third generation hits the scene with a 2 liter engine and a smidge larger body size in 2006 with a power retractable hard top variant available option too. They’ve dropped the Miata name to simply the MX-5. This generation got a healthy jump in power of 170hp with the 2 liter engine however it was heavier than it’s predecessors at 2,400lb. this is also the generation you’d first see a power-retractable hardtop.
-It is 2016 and the fourth generation, aka ND generation, comes out with an all new 2 liter sky active-g engine. It also shed some pounds, weighing in at 2,300. Six speed manual was standard and six speed automatic optional. You’d see a switch from hydraulic to electric power-assisted steering.
Soon following would be the MX-5 RF in 2017, a power retractable roof panel and it looks damn good. Honestly the best of the generations for styling.
Today’s 2020 Miata SKYACTIV® 2.0L DOHC 4-cylinder can produce 181hp and cost you from basically $27k and up
Throughout the years Mazda has held true to their “jinba Ittai” mantra for the Mx-5… It has remained an affordable, light, fun to drive car with performance.
