An Introduction to Shindō Musō Ryū Jōdō
Members of the Rose City Shindōkai practice jōdō, the way of the staff. Jōdō was created by Musō Gonnosuke Katsuyoushi about 400 years ago. The art, Shindō Musō Ryū, teaches how to defeat a swordsman using a short staff–the jō–with an emphasis on proper combative distance, timing, and concentration.

Special thanks to the Oregon Koto-Kai for permission to use a clip from “Midnight Rain” composed by Elizabeth Falconer (intro) and “Josho no Kanata” composed by Hikaru Sawai (photo montage). We also want to thank the staff of the Mochitsuki festival for working so hard to pull this event together year after year.

About Rose City Shindokai
We study jōdō as taught by the late Kaminoda Tsunemori Sensei. The chief instructor of the Shindōkai is Dan Pearson, menkyō and a direct student of Kaminoda Sensei. The Rose City Shindōkai was established in 2016 when Dan relocated from Washington, D.C. to Portland. In D.C. Dan founded the Capital Area Jodokai and remains the senior instructor there. While the Shindōkai is a relatively small group, we are dedicated to learning the entirety of traditional Shindō Musō Ryū jōdō and associated weapons arts. Members of the Portland group participate in a national gasshuku and also have opportunities to travel to Japan to train.
