Sonata Romántica

Manuel Maria Ponce (1882-1948)

Allegro Moderato
Andante Espressivo
Moment Musical
Allegretto Vivo
Manuel Ponce was a Mexican composer active in the 20th century. His work as a composer, music educator and scholar of Mexican music connected the concert scene with a mostly forgotten tradition of popular song and Mexican folklore. Many of his compositions are strongly influenced by the harmonies and form of traditional songs. Legendary classical guitar Andres Segovia gave a concert in Mexico city in 1923. Ponce attended the concert and upon meeting Ponce after the concert Segovia requested a composition from the young composer for the guitar. The fruitful collaboration that followed this promising beginning has been recorded in the Segovia-Ponce letters. Segovia suggested that Ponce compose works in the style of other composers.

The Sonata Romántica closely follows Schubert’s harmonic, tonal, and thematic characteristics, applying them within his four-movement piano sonata paradigm. Ponce establishes intentional references to specific moments of Schubert, attempting to encapsulate the numerous ideas that integrate into a Schubertian aesthetic.
