🔊🗣️🎶 Our lunchtime pitstop on the way to Newton Cove was at #Yuquot (“Friendly Cove”) on #NootkaIsland, ancestral home of the indigenous Mowachaht/Muchalaht First Nations tribe. Here, most hikers come for the 4-5 day hike that circumnavigates the island, while day-trippers like us come for a picnic on the beach and/or to visit the cultural sites.

It’s here that Captain James Cook first met Chief Maquinna and the Mowachaht/Muchalaht people in 1778—a totem of Maquinna stands on the shore in remembrance. Nearby is the old St. Pius X Catholic Church, which has been a structure in the local community since 1956, where today it’s a gathering place and small museum of the Mowachaht/Muchalaht. We asked permission to see inside because it was technically closed since it’s currently being used as storage for a 15-crate delivery from the #AmericanNaturalHistoryMuseum in New York City, who appeased the tribe’s request for the return of their sacred whale shrine that had just been sitting in storage and not even on display. The crates were shipped with a blessing of a cedar branch attached to each one.

We also paid a visit to the workshop of good-humored master carver Sanford Williams, who still proudly makes totems, art, and carvings as he has for decades.
