The Prime Minister has triggered the national emergency declaration in the wake of the catastrophic flooding in northern New South Wales.

Scott Morrison says the scale of the disaster in the Richmond and Clarence Valley and Lismore is on another scale to that being experienced in other parts of the country.

In those specific areas - extending commonwealth disaster payments that means anyone receiving the $1000 payment for adults and $400 payment for children in those three areas will receive another two of those payments later this month.

The Prime Minister says it's about putting more money in the pockets of people who've lost so much giving them confidence that they'll be able to buy food for their families.

Scott Morrison also made a commitment that flood mitigation works for the northern rivers region, the scale of which he said are well known and already overdue will be funded by the commonwealth, state and local governments.
