On April 27, 2011, the most historical modern Tornado Outbreak would occur across the south-southeast US. It involved record-breaking twisters and was the most ever tornadoes to be confirmed in one 24 hour period. Of these tornadoes, a handful were of violent (EF4+) intensity. One of the violent twisters ended up being a fairly long tracked tornado that began just as the sun went down in Ringgold, Georgia. It would track for multiple miles into south-east Tennessee. Most interestingly, after the twister passed Ringgold, its documentation became scarce, with just about no videos or pictures showcasing the twister past that point being discovered. That was until today. Almost a year ago, I was checking out a “TalkWeather” forum about lost tornado media. I eventually reached the most recent post, which was discussing a video that seemed to show the Ringgold tornado illuminated by power flashes later in its life. But of course, it was lost. With just one screenshot grabbed from a news article left, that was the end of the conversation. But, as a lost tornado media enthusiast, wasn’t gonna let it end there. Sooner than later I was digging for traces of this twister. I read the article and noticed a name accredited to the videographer: Katie Steinbacher. It was a lead. Immediately i went into the #1 place to easily contact people: Facebook. I looked up the name and low and behold a search result within the area of the tornado came up, but under a different last name. I was suspicious but I had nothing to lose so i threw out a dm expecting no response.

To my surprise, within minutes, I got a response: “Ya that was me!”
I immediately responded back and began inquiring about her story and the whereabouts of the footage. she was SO kind and was willing to give me as much as she possibly could. that included how she recorded the footage, where she was in relation to the tornado, what that day & the interview was like, as well as much more you can see on my twitter @tornadicwonder. Eventually, I got to ask if she had the lost footage was saddened to find it was gone… forever. On the brighter side, she did get to share some pictures from her old facebook log back in 2011 that revealed the tornado beautifully illuminated under the night sky. After a bit of talking, I published a detailed thread describing by convo with Katie, showcasing the pics and more. Since then, the trail ran dry and no updates happened for over 8 months.

But, on August 8, 2024, I got a message the had been waiting for: “Hey I had finally found the video I took that night figured you would want it!” Attached was a link to the unearthed footage discovered in the depths of her facebook, in full quality. I was shocked and immediately begin thanking her for sharing it! It was a perfect blessing and offered a chance for me to share a very important part of 4/27/11 history! With special permission from Katie, I can finally post this footage so everyone can see it!!
