Canonical has announced the release of Ubuntu 20.04.6 LTS , the new maintenance release of the penultimate long-term supported version of the distribution. Here we do not find important news, which is normal if we see the profile of the system and that more than two years have passed since the initial launch, but there is a very important feature that has been recovered.

Canonical explains through its mailing list that, “unlike previous point releases, 20.04.6 is an update to the AMD64 (or x86 64-bit) installation media after recent key revocations, which which re-enables its use on systems enabled for Secure Boot ”.

In other words that are easier to understand, the highlight of this release is the reinstatement of support for Secure Boot , the controversial UEFI feature that is advocated by some and rejected by others, with some within the second group saying it is of an attempt by Microsoft to drive alternative operating systems off the market.

For the rest and as is logical, Ubuntu 20.04.6 LTS includes all the security patches and to correct software bugs that have been detected. The system includes by default GNOME 3.36.8 , Linux 5.15 and Mesa 21.2.6 as core components.

Ubuntu 20.04 LTS still has some rope left , more specifically two more years of support through the standard path. However, some may depend so much on it that they may want to keep it even after the standard support time has elapsed, so in those cases it never hurts to subscribe to Ubuntu Pro, which since the beginning of the year can be used for free up to five machines to give five more years of support for Ubuntu LTS installations, which would add up to ten years of support in total.
