BRIEF HISTORY OF NIYOGAN FESTIVAL

The Municipality of Magsaysay and its constituents, treasure the
Niyog as symbol of livelihood and existence.

Niyog is commonly known to us in Visayan as Lubi, and same it is
known as Niyog for the Ilocano, Tagalog, and Maranaw, it is coconut
in English, bearing a scientific name Cocus Nuciferia, a tree or plant with numerous uses.

This called lubi or niyog is the main product of the municipality of which Magsaysay is noted for.

In the late 90's it came to a meeting the minds of the officials and leaders of Magsaysay, under the leadership of the late Mayor Hadji Macasamat B. Omar that in celebrating the Araw ng Magsaysay features the Niyogan Festival, as its main highligh of the event.

The Niyogan Festival was firt celebrated in the year 1997 by virtue of the resolution no. 36.s. 1997 of the Sangguniang Bayan of Magsaysay, Lanao del Norte and every year thereafter, except in the year 2000 and 2016, the said festivity was considered as one the highlights for the Araw ng Magsaysay Celebration in every 23rd day of May.

During the first NIYOGAN FESTIVAL, the Department of Toursim under the able leadership of the Secretary of Mina T. Gabor extended financial assistance to the Municipality for the prizes and other related expenditures for the said momentous activity.

THE MAIN OBJECTIVES OF THE FESTIVITY ARE:
1. To promote the potentiality of Magsaysay in coconut production;
2. To promote and develop the coconut industry of tourism;
3. To establish the municipality identiy from that of other municipalities inside and outside of the Province of Lanao del Norte;
4. To promote peace and unity and God-loving people in spite cultural diversities.

In the year 2002 during that Hadji Horon D. Omar Sr. was the Municipalty mayor of the municipality of Magsaysay, the Sangguniang Bayan passed the resolution thrue the Sangguniang Panlalawigan of the Province of Lanao del Norte, requesting the then Tourism Secretary now senator Richard Gordon to accredit and / or register the Nigyogan Festival of Magasaysay, Lanao del Norte.

In the year past 3 years was during the administration of Mayor Haironi D. Omar Sr. the Araw ng Magsaysay Steering Committee decided to make the Niyogan Festival an invitational contest. But for this years celebration, it was agreed that the contingents will be coming from the 24 barangays of the Municipality and clustered in 3 group. and this is the NIYOGAN FESTIVAL 2023
