In this video, we discuss 9 literary devices definition & examples - Imagery, Personification, Litotes, Onomatopoeia, Kenning, Metonymy, Synecdoche, Synesthesia and Zeugma.
Figures of speech in English Literature are used to highlight a particular description or to emphasize an interesting detail in order to beautify the literary work. Literary devices are used widely in poems, plays, novels and essays.
The first two figures of speech in english grammar that we look at are Imagery and Personification.
Imagery figure of speech is visually descriptive or figurative language that appeals to the five senses of the readers. They are of 5 types: Visual Imagery, Auditory Imagery, Olfactory Imagery, Tactile Imagery and Gustatory Imagery.

Next we talk about Litotes meaning and litotes examples. Litotes uses double negatives to affirm a positive statement.
Onomatopoeia figure of speech is the formation of words that imitate the natural sounds of a thing such as splash, tinkle. The Onomatopoeia meaning and Onomatopoeia examples are discussed in the video.
Kenning in English Literature is used as a metaphor. It is the combination of two words to form a compound phrase. In the video, we talk in detail about kenning meaning and kenning examples.
Next on our list is Metonymy. Metonymy meaning is simplified so that you can understand how it is used along with some easy Metonymy examples.
Synecdoche in poetry is used to replace part instead of whole and vice versa. You can understand the Synecdoche meaning when you take a closer look at the Synecdoche examples discussed in the video.
The Synesthesia figure of speech is used by writers to present characters, places and objects in such a way that they can appeal to more than one sense of the reader at a given time. Classic Synesthesia example is from Dante's Divine Comedy- 'Back to the region where the Sun is silent.' The statement appeals to both the senses of sight and hearing.
The Zeugma figure of speech is the usage of one word to govern two or more words for a powerful effect. You can understand zeugma meaning when you will take a look at the zeugma examples discussed in the video.
