Apple iPhone 13 Pro 4K Cinematic Video Test

Finally picked up my iPhone 13 Pro. 2 years ago I did an iPhone 11 Pro video. And it was very popular. Thank you very much. And last year I didn’t buy the 12. So I couldn’t do the video. But its finally another iPhone video now.

This year, apple seems to focus a lot more on the cameras. Which is a good thing. I love how the quality keeps getting better and better. Especially on the video side this gen. We have Cinematic Mode, Night mode for video and Macro mode. I know everyone gets excited about the “Cinematic Mode”. But I personally not so much. It looks nice on their Apple demos. But the reality, it looks okay. And if depends on the lighting condition, sometime the edge cut off a lot. You can tell its a software thing. And also you can’t do 4K with Cinematic mode. And I love shooting 4K. 

So for me if I want the bokeh, I would rather shoot with the 26mm f/1.5 lens with the real bokeh. And to be honest, the bokeh looks nice on that. But ofcoz you can’t pull the focus with that. 

But what got me excited was the Nightmode. As we all know, phones always look bad at night. Especially in video mode. Having the night mode for video is just another level. Although I was very rush on making the first iPhone 13 Pro video. I think I will do another video just about lowlight when I have time.

Right now, there is no ProRes format available on the phone. We have to wait for the update. And I’m not sure if that ProRes is gonna give the video quality a lot better. Cos if the lens is soft or the image is very noisy. Better codec is not going to change the result. Better codec might be easier to edit and colour grade. But other than that, that’s pretty much it. (I have to test it again when the ProRes become available) 

Over all, the iPhone video has improved a lot. And the video quality is superb. Day time footage looks almost like a pro mirrorless camera now. I was very enjoyed using the phone. Let me know if you want me to do the part 2 ProRes video or not?

Pros
Great image quality
lowlight video has been improved a lot from before
Wide angle lens is a lot sharper on the 13 Pro

Cons
Image quality is nice, but you could still tell it was shot from a phone
Hate the auto Macro mode, it makes it hard when you wanna slide from a foreground, the phone will think its a close up shot
Still very contrasty, and no detail when you zoom in the clip
77mm is only for photo mode, in video mode it crops in further. Its more like a 82mm to me.
