Many of us in the POR community have been devastated by the breakup of a favorite band. It throws our world off balance and leaves us feeling adrift. I was personally gutted when today's band Journey broke up, not just once, but twice. This breakup not only left me dejected for years but also altered the trajectory of one of my all-time favorite singers Steve Perry. The juicy details of this Rock n’ Roll Peyton Place is NEXT….on Professor of Rock.

A band breaking up can feel as catastrophic as a natural disaster. In the aftermath, millions of fans are left feeling lost and heartbroken. It almost seems like bands are destined to implode. Even the biggest ones don't escape this fate. The Rock Era has seen its share of legendary breakups—The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, The Police, The Clash, The Smiths These iconic groups all eventually went their separate ways. The reasons behind a band's split vary, depending on who you ask. There are always at least two sides to every story, and with a group of musicians, there can be a different version from each member.

I wasn’t in my coming of age years when I heard the upsetting news that Steve Perry had left Journey… I think it was on MTV News…. I remember being shattered. I loved Journey, and imagining them without Perry was tough on my adolescent heart. I truly believed—and still believe—that Steve Perry was the greatest rock vocalist ever. I was confused and couldn’t understand how this could happen to one of my all-time favorite bands. I wanted answers. I frantically searched for any information about Steve’s departure. It wasn’t until years later that I learned about everything going on behind the scenes that led to his inevitable, permanent exit. Today’s episode is about the fracture and comeback of the band with their album Trial by Fire and #1 hit The You Love a Woman but let’s got back to the beginning for a sec. Steve Perry joined Journey as their frontman in October 1977, replacing Robert Fleischman, who also wrote the lyrics for their first charted hit. “Wheel in the Sky.”

The original band members eased Steve in as quietly as possible. During Perry's first concert with Journey, the band didn’t even mention his name on stage to avoid upsetting fans who might miss Fleischman. Although fans were skeptical of Perry when he first joined the group, he was able to win fans over after the release of his first album, Infinity, which had a much different sound than hardcore Journey loyalists expected. Eventually, fans couldn’t deny that Steve was an incredible addition who would take the band to great new heights, and they grew to love his powerful vocals. Steve became a pin-up front man, and the band's principal lyricist. So there are always so many different perspectives to a break-up. So I will give all sides, exactly as they’ve said in their own words.
