The title of this this work-- 'counterculture'-- came after spending a meaningful but short time with the performers and learning about their lives as musicians. I was struck by how they all have backgrounds in traditional forms of performance, but felt as though they could could not adequately express what they wanted to express through those traditions. They all seemed to have developed a practice that countered-- responded in opposition-- to the standard method of performance on their respective instruments; hence the title, 'counterculture'.
