This mini flash unit is diminutive, easily carried in a pocket. But the flash unit is not just for cameras that don't come with a flash, but an actual upgrade to many built in flash units. On my Sony A6300, the in-built "pop-out" flash is definitely less bright than the SL03 unit. (See video for comparisons.)

This unit has a rotating flash unit and enough power that you could bounce light off a ceiling for indirect flash lighting. The built in video fill light is a nice feature to have, especially if you swap between shooting video content and photos with the same camera rapidly. It only runs for 38 minutes on a full charge, and is only a 1 watt light, but it certainly gives you a boost for close up work and is much better than not having a fill light.

It recharges via a USB-C port in less than an hour, and while it successfully negotiates USB-C power delivery, it only draws 5 volts and 0.5 amps (2.1 watts) so any USB port will be able to charge it up using the included USB-A to USB-C cable.

The flash gives you the option of 1/8th, 1/4th, 1/2th or full (1/1) power. At full power it takes about 3 seconds to recycle, while at 1/8th power it is basically ready to go as soon as you take a photo. I suspect most people would leave it at 1/1 power unless you are super close to a subject.

This unit, while very functional, is not a professional level fill light or a professional flash unit. [But the price is appropriately low, and it's super easy to pack and store.] Yes, you can buy stronger fill lights, yes you can get larger and more powerful flash units. BUT, at this price and size, the ULANZI SL03 punches above its cost/size class, and would be a perfect companion for a "not quite professional" smaller camera, for your "just on holiday" point and shoot, etc. If you have a small camera with a hot shoe, but no built in flash or fill light, this may be the perfect choice for you.
