What causes the pressure relief valve to keep opening? What causes a water heater to leak or drain water every day? In this quick episode of Repair and Replace, Vance explains how the pressure relief valve works in a water heater and what can cause the valve to open intermittently or even daily. In some homes a pressure reducing valve or backflow preventer installed on the main water line will create a closed system. Normal water pressure expansion in a closed system will cause the pressure relief valve to discharge water occasionally. This can be solved by installing a thermal expansion tank on the cold water supply line.
