The Islanders’ d-man tries to reverse the puck, and Kapanen is able to jump on it. Malkin peels off, so Zucker goes below the goal line, because he knows Kapanen is going to stuff it back down there if he gets to the puck, which he does. So Zucker loses a puck battle below the goal line, and the Islanders try to clear the puck, but Penguins’ d-man Cody Ceci keeps it in and Kapanen is able to pick up a loose puck and take a shot. The puck goes below the goal line again, and Zucker, who’s still the “1” in this forecheck is on it. The Islanders reverse it again, and Ceci pinches this time, and you don’t see it when he pinches, but Kapanen covers the point, and Ceci’s d-partner Mike’s Matheson slides over to cover Ceci’s side. So it’s still a 1-2-2 but the d-man and the winger have switched now, which is good, because the puck gets to Kapanen at the point, who keeps it in and leads to another opportunity, but the shot gets blocked.

So in a 1-2-2, you’re trying to force the opposing d-men to move the puck up the boards where you’ll either get a puck battle or, if they reverse it, you’ll have a race for a loose puck like we saw here. And the key is the forwards recognizing who’s “1” and where they need to get to be part of the “2.”
