You can find bright orange California poppies throughout the entire state from Oregon all the way down to Mexico. Even though the poppy is protected from grazing and human interference, only one place in California is fully dedicated to the flower. Come springtime and get ready for an eye-popping show, staged by Mother Nature at this California state park. In the remote hills, in a protected area noted as a perfect microclimate for poppies, you can experience a Technicolor display of California poppies, the state’s official flower, with countless bright orange petals unfurling in the sunlight.

The reserve is open to visitors daily from sunrise to sunset. The wildflower season generally lasts from as early as mid-February through May, with a variety of wildflowers creating a mosaic of color that changes daily. Eight miles of trails that wind through the gentle rolling hills, including a paved section for wheelchair access, make the park a wonderful place to hike and explore any season. Most visitors stick to the 3.3-mile South and North Loop trails with a quick side trip to the Tehachapi Vista Point.

Poppies open up in mid-morning, and curl up in the late afternoon/evening or if it’s cold, so check the weather forecast.

Parking Fees is $10 per vehicle or $9 per vehicle with a senior on board, 62 and over. The parking lot will be full by 10’o clock on the weekend! Visitors can park outside and walk in on the entrance path for free; be sure to mind the no parking signs to avoid a parking ticket.

Though poppies in the reserve bloom every spring, best blooms are influenced by a combination of factors: sun, clouds, heat, rain, and even wind. The bloom time changes every year, generally it happens early in April, but it can take place any time between mid-March and early May. For best viewing, time your visit for a sunny midmorning, if you can.

Antelope Valley makes for an easy day trip from Los Angeles, with the drive taking about an hour and 20 minutes if you don't hit traffic.
