After you land in the Grasslands, you'll need to get yourself a Chocobo. Once you've done this, there are a lot of other things to do, but the main objective is to cross the swamp. However, the Midgardsomr snake boss patrols the waters and you know you need to defeat it to make it to the other side. It's weakness is ice, but it breathes fire and delivers big AOE attacks, so you need to know how to deal with these to get through.
