The National Insurance Number (NINo) is a number that confirms you have the right to work in the UK when you’re looking for a job or working as self-employed.
If you have a National Insurance Number, you must check that the contributions and tax are recorded against your name only. The National Insurance Number (NINo) is made of two letters, six digits, and one letter at the end (for example: AB123456C).
You can find your National Insurance Number (NINo) in a variety of places:
On your payslip;
On your P60 or P45;
In the National Insurance section of your personal tax account;
On letters from HMRC about your tax, pension or state benefits.

You usually get sent a National Insurance number (NINo) just before your 16th birthday. If you recently moved to the UK and don’t have one, you can apply here.
What if you’ve lost your National Insurance Number (NINo)?
If you can't find your National Insurance number (NINo) anywhere, you can fill in form CA5403 and send it to the corresponding address or you can contact the National Insurance numbers helpline and answer some security questions. After this, HMRC will post your National Insurance number (NINo) to you.
