Thorium is often viewed as a promising future nuclear fuel. Unlike uranium, it is more abundant and widely distributed, and India’s reserves are especially significant because the country does not have large uranium deposits. This has encouraged Indian scientists and policymakers to explore thorium as a long-term option for nuclear energy.

India’s nuclear programme has for decades included a plan to eventually shift toward thorium-based reactors. However, thorium cannot be used directly as fuel. It must first go through a process in which it is converted into a usable form inside special types of reactors. This makes the technology more complex and means that widespread thorium-based power is still something for the future rather than the present.

Even so, India’s large reserves provide a sense of strategic advantage. If thorium reactor technology becomes mature and practical on an industrial scale, the country could rely far more on its own natural resources for nuclear energy. This could reduce dependence on imported fuel and support a more self-reliant energy system in the long run.
