He belonged to the well-armed gladiators: he had a gladius (40-50 cm in length) and a large rectangular shield (scutum) of the Roman legionnaires. The Murmillons wore a Boeotian helmet with a stylized fish on the crest, forearm armor (manica) on the right arm, a loincloth (subligaculum) and belt (balteus or cingulum), a greave on the right leg, thick windings covering the top of the foot (ocrea), and short armor.
