The U.S. State Department has emphasized the rigorous nature of its visa vetting process amidst growing reports that the Trump administration may introduce stricter social media screenings for student visa applicants.

During a press briefing on Tuesday (local time), State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce confirmed that the United States will continue to carefully assess visa applications for students, tourists, and other visitors.

“We take very seriously the process of vetting who it is that comes into the country, and we're going to continue to do that,” said Bruce. “Whether you're a student or a tourist who needs a visa, or whoever you are, we're going to be looking at you.”

This development follows a diplomatic cable obtained by Politico, which revealed that U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has instructed embassies and consulates to halt new visa interview appointments for student applicants while stricter social media checks are considered.

Bruce acknowledged that while the Trump administration’s approach may appear “counterproductive” to some, it is intended to ensure that all visitors respect and understand U.S. laws.
