Mission Viejo Animal Services successfully rescued a lost dog from a remote canyon area following an extensive two-day search involving ground teams and aerial thermal drone technology.

On Friday, Animal Services responded to a call from a Dove Canyon resident who reported that strong winds had startled and caused their dog to flee. The dog was last seen running into a canyon area between Dove Canyon and Coto de Caza. Animal Control Officers immediately responded and conducted a thorough search of the surrounding terrain using officers on ground and a thermal drone. Despite their efforts, due to the strong winds, the drone search was limited, and the dog could not be located before nightfall.

The next morning, Mission Viejo Animal Services received a new report from a resident who heard a dog barking in a remote canyon nearly one mile from where the dog was originally lost. Multiple Animal Control Officers were dispatched to the area. Using the department’s thermal drone, officers were able to pinpoint the dog’s exact location. Officers were then guided through the rugged terrain and dense brush to reach the animal, ultimately securing and safely extricating the dog from the steep canyon.

The dog was reunited with its grateful owner and was reported to be in good condition with no visible injuries.
