How do astronauts return to Earth?

The procedure of placing the spacecrafts (space shuttle) in a proper orbit is known as launching process. During this procedure, we can control the activity of spacecrafts from Earth stations.

The launch process can be divided into two phases: the launch phase and the orbit injection phase.

During the launch phase, the launch vehicle places the satellite (space shuttle) into the transfer orbit--an elliptical orbit that has at its farthest point from earth (apogee) the geosynchronous elevation of 22,238 miles and at its nearest point (perigee) an elevation of not less than 100 miles.

The energy required to move the spacecraft from the elliptical transfer orbit into the geosynchronous orbit is supplied by the spacecraft’s apogee kick motor (AKM). This is known as the orbit injection phase.

When the spacecraft reaches the desired height of the orbit, its subsystems like solar panels and communication antennas get unfurled. Now, the spacecraft is ready to provide services to the public.
